These Latin handles fit into the axe's eye (the hole in the head) and are friction-fitted thanks to their wedge-shaped tongue (end of the handle) that fits inside the eye.
When using the axe, its natural "throwing" motion helps keep the head firmly fixed on the handle. This isn't about throwing the tool, but rather because by holding the bottom of the handle, we throw the upper part with our other hand so that the edge of the head can be driven into the wood grain.
