Last year, a passionate customer purchased a Milano axe head. A few days later, he came back with a handle he had shaped himself for carving. A week later, he presented an improved version.
Step by step, we worked together to perfect the prototype — and that customer has since become a collaborator of La Cognée.
From this meeting was born a unique carving hatchet, where Italian tradition meets Quebec craftsmanship.
Each handle is hand-shaped and balanced to the gram for perfect equilibrium, excellent control, and a natural comfort in hand.
A tool designed not for felling, but for creation — to hew, shape, carve, and give form to the material, letting the gesture speak.
Specifications :
- Axe head forged in Italy by BR Rinaldi, a family-owned company making semi-industrial, hand-finished axes and tools of exceptional quality and durability since 1780.
- Steel: 55Si7, 58 HRC — hard, resilient spring steel.
- Head weight: 600 g / 1.3 lb

- Artisanal handle :
- 10" ash handle, hand-shaped in Quebec and finished with linseed oil.
- Laminated “chef’s choice”: assembled from various wood species according to the inspiration of the master craftsman. (See last photos for current availability — the handle currently available features a Black Walnut laminate.)
- Bevel (left- or right-handed):
Note: actual head weight may vary slightly, as each piece is hand-forged and finished individually on an anvil.
- Short and obtuse bevel on the dominant-hand side, and long, fine bevel on the opposite side — following the teachings of Wille Sundqvist (Swedish Carving Techniques).
